Angela Darmody: Killed by Lazy Writing

Angela-Darmody

I hope nobody was too surprised by what happened to Angela Darmody and her girlfriend Sunday night on the usually stellar “Boardwalk Empire.” If you were surprised, then you haven’t been paying attention to pop culture very carefully. The character played by Aleksa Palladino is just the most recent victim.

Boardwalk Empire: “Battle of the Century”

be209nuckydispara

No sooner do I give you a rundown of the important characters on HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” than the show releases an episode that suggests expanded roles for some of this season’s supporting players. “Battle of the Century” refers to a hotly-anticipated heavyweight title fight between champion Jack Dempsey, who we met earlier in the season, and a French challenger. But, given the simmering build-up in tensions we’ve been treated to this year, it’s a bit of a tease as a title for this episode.

Not to say that this wasn’t a stunning week for “Boardwalk Empire,” because it was.

Disney Animal Kingdom Babies

Not much to say here.  I mentioned to my daughter that there was a baby elephant at Animal Kingdom.  She wanted to see a picture.  So, while I had some time on my hands, I figured I’d compile some pictures of baby animals at Animal Kingdom.  If cute animal pictures is your thing, enjoy.

Happy Birthday, Mickey Mouse

Mickey-Mouse-Birthday-hd-wallpapers6-600x450

On November 18, 1928, Mickey Mouse made his debut in the classic cartoon Steamboat Willie.  The cartoon mouse would go on to become an international icon.  As a Disney fan, I thought I would celebrate Mickey’s 83rd birthday with a rambling post about my personal history with the mouse.

Boardwalk Empire: Catch Up with A Rogue’s Gallery

boardwalk empire season 2 premiere tv ad

Everyone has had it happen. Life is busy. There’s a new show coming on soon, and it looks good. “I’ll have to check that one out,” you think to yourself. Three months later, you’ve pretty much missed the whole first season and to make matters worse, everyone is raving about the show.

Review: Let Me In

Recently, I wrote up a vampires vs. zombies smack-down article.  While I had to give vampires credit for being more versatile and having a longer cinematic history, ultimately I cast my vote in favor of zombies.  I did this reluctantly and with a lot of caveats.

Basically, it came down to this: the state of vampire movies these days is pretty poor.  Most vampire stories these days are gothic romances (and most aren’t very good ones at that).  It had been a long time since a vampire movie had been very good or scary.

A couple of days after I wrote that article (Halloween, to be specific), I watched Let Me In.  And now, I have to change my vote.

Underappreciated Masterpiece: “Spilt Milk” by Jellyfish

61vVWmxq54L._SCLZZZZZZZ_1
Just like most any art form, taste in music is a very personal thing. It can, however, elicit almost violent disagreement with a regularity that, say, painting, or sculpting, or even film don’t seem to match. I don’t often expect to be able to offer a thought on music without having it challenged.

Review: American Horror Story, “Piggy, Piggy”

I approached this series with some reluctance.  Sure, the commercials were weird and inventive.  But I had no idea what to expect.  With my TV dance card full, I let episodes build up on my DVR while I waited to hear some feedback on the show.  Well, a few commenters in the Walking Dead reviews urged me to start watching.  So I did.  And I have to admit that American Horror Story is a better show than Walking Dead on just about every non-zombie-related level I can think of.  Thanks to all those who recommended it to me.

Disney Deal or No Deal: Accommodations

aoa exterior

The intent of this series is to explore the value of a Walt Disney World Vacation.  In the Introduction, I raised the question of whether or not a Disney World vacation could be considered a deal.  In Part 1, I looked at the rising cost of theme park tickets and compared them to inflation and the cost of other forms of entertainment.  In this installment, I will address the cost of hotel accommodations.

A Very Weasley Halloween

Because my wife’s birthday is in October, we’ve taken to Halloween-tinged trips to celebrate the last couple of years. Last year it was “Howl-O-Scream” at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Virginia, which was great fun. This year we decided to go see the “Wizarding World of Harry Potter” at Universal’s Islands of Adventure in Orlando.
