Road to Oscar 2/ “Driving Miss Daisy” 23 years later? PGA and SAG results

85 oscar

Last week in comments an interesting observation came about chances for “Argo” to upset “Lincoln” in what look as an uphill battle. The last movie to win “Best Picture” without having a nomination for “Best Director” has been “Driving Miss Daisy” in 1990. However it looks more and more likely that “Argo” can pull the upset.

What the Hell Happened to Cuba Gooding Jr.?

19th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards - Backstage And Audience

Cuba Gooding Jr.

Academy Award winner, Cuba Gooding, Jr. used to be cast in movies to give them an air of prestige.  His presence was a signal to the audience that the movie they were seeing was meant to be taken seriously, even if it was directed by Michael Bay.  But then, Gooding’s image changed.  After a string of critical drubbing and commercial disasters, Gooding went from Hollywood darling to direct-to-video pariah.

The Road to Oscar: Nomination, Bookies and What Other Awards Told Us

85 oscar

Editor’s Note: Le Blog is happy to welcome a new contributor, Johnny 88 who has offered to cover the Awards Season for our site.

First presentation: I’m an italian guy who enjoys this wonderful blog since last year. I love movies and I love the award seasons 😉 the reason for my interest on the award season is because the vast majority of movie protagonists of the award season are released in my country lately than in the US. So I use the suggestions  that comes from the most prestigious awards (Oscar; Golden Globe; BAFTA; Critics Choice etc.) to choose what movies deserve my money. Though sometimes I have to disagree with Academy; HFPA etc. I usually find their suggestions good. Since I’m italian i’m hoping you will forgive me in case of grammar mistakes 😀

So the award season is started and 30 days from now we’ll see who the Academy will reward. My intention is to follow a “Road to Oscar” and have a weekly update to bookies quotas and to follow the leading Oscar predictors (BAFTA; SAG; DGA and WGA).   I will also give my impression on it (take into consideration that I’m from Italy and many of these films will be released in my country between now and Oscar night, so I’ll leave my impressions as I see the movies).

What the Hell Happened to Molly Ringwald?

Molly Ringwalkd - 2014

Molly Ringwald defined a specific period in pop culture history.  She didn’t win a lot of awards or work with a lot of legendary directors and co-stars.  But Ringwald’s cultural impact was far greater than her filmography would suggest.  If you were in high school in the early-to-mid eighties, Molly Ringwald was IT.  There was Ringwald and there was everyone else.

But just a few short years after appearing on the cover of Time Magazine, the moment passed.  Ringwald went from IT-girl to has-been practically overnight.

What the Hell Happened to Matthew Broderick?

broderick

Matthew Broderick

Matthew Broderick is a triple threat.  He has been a star of stage and screen.  His filmography includes iconic roles like Ferris Bueller and the voice of the Lion King.  He’s even fought Godzilla.  But these days, you are far more likely to see the former Ferris Bueller on Broadway than starring in a hit movie.  The former A-lister’s film career is still active, but it has definitely cooled.

What the Hell Happened to Melanie Griffith?

Melanie Griffith

Melanie Griffith

Melanie Griffith is the daughter of Hollywood icon, Tippi Hedren, an Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe winner.  She rose to the A-list in the 80s working with directors like Brian De Palma, Mike Nichols and Jonathan Demme.  But after a promising decade, she stumbled and fell off the a-List in the 90s.
