What the Hell Happened to Martin Lawrence?

martin lawrence 2013

Martin Lawrence

In the mid-90’s, Martin Lawrence had a hit TV show and a burgeoning movie career. He went on to establish himself as a Hollywood A-lister in big screen action movies and comedies. But by the end of the decade, Lawrence was surrounded by scandal. Since then, his movie career has slowed down considerably. His last box office hit was in 2007.

Young Hollywood Hit Lists – 1996

movieline March 1996 cover

“A treasure trove of top tens to help you make your way through the booby-trapped jungle of Tinseltown’s younger stars, comers and soon-to-be-goners.”

I had a lot of fun revisiting predictions made by Movieline magazine in their 1991 Young Hollywood issue.  So naturally, I went back for more.  The format of the magazine changed every year.  Future issues didn’t include the same “Who’s Who”-style article I covered last time.  But, the 1996 issue included some fun top ten lists.

Here are some of my favorites along with some modern-day commentary of my own.

Boardwalk Empire: Who will Bite the Big One?

**This article will discuss the mortality of Boardwalk Empire characters past and present. Spoilers Abound.**
There is but a single episode left in season 4 of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, and with no significant deaths in its penultimate episode, most fans of the series have to be expecting that the remaining characters are far from safe. I will not be addressing patently historical figures, because Boardwalk Empire has been careful about bumping them off with relative accuracy. If you don’t want to know the history ahead of time, I’m not going to provide those kinds of spoilers. Instead, I will only provide conjecture about the characters who the writers will feel like they have the freedom to dispose of.

Boardwalk Empire: Letting Go

**This article will discuss details of the 11/17/2013 episode of Boardwalk Empire. There will be spoilers**

Boardwalk Empire is full of characters who you can trust to be untrustworthy. Because of this, whenever we are presented with a character who does not appear to have an obviously nefarious or hidden agenda, we start looking for it. Sometimes we are right.

Recovered Pictures from the Lost Disney World Trip of 2008

Disney World 2008 Castle

In 2008, we took an Orlando vacation that included a couple of days at Walt Disney World.  This was the only time we ever attended Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party.  Mindy was pregnant with Kara (it wasn’t planned that way) so in a way, this was Kara’s first trip.  When we returned from the trip, our pictures were deleted from the digital camera before they could be saved to a hard drive.  As a result, the digital copies were lost forever.

However, while cleaning out a junk drawer this weekend, I came across the only printed copies.  So I have scanned the pictures so I could share them here.  They aren’t as pristine as the digital copies.  But they are better than nothing.  So for the first time, here are the pictures from our 2008 Disney World vacation.

Who Was Who in Young Hollywood 1991

young hollywood cover I was doing some research when I came across an article in an old Movieline Magazine.  The article was about the hot young Hollywood stars of 1991.  Who did they pick as the stars of the future?  And were they right?  Let’s take a look. Read the rest of this entry

What the Hell Happened to Rene Russo?

rene russo 2013

Rene Russo came seemingly out of nowhere and became one of the top actresses of the 90’s.  She start in a string of hits for most of the decade.  She has worked with directors like Richard Donner, Wolfgang Petersen, Barry Sonnenfeld, and Ron Howard.  And then, as suddenly as she appeared, she left Hollywood for a six year hiatus.  These days, she plays the mother of the god of thunder in the Thor movies.

Trailer: Lifetime’s Flowers in the Attic

Graham - Flowers in the attic

For the first time in my life, I am excited about a Lifetime movie.

Yeah, I read all the then-published VC Andrews books when I was a freshman in high school.  Yes, I have seen the disappointing big screen adaptation more than once.  And I am looking forward to this new version which stars Ellen Burstyn, Kiernan Shipka and Heather Graham.

The new version is rumored to have all the creepy stuff that was cut out of the movie.  And no, I don’t feel good about the fact that I am looking forward to this 2014 TV movie.

Don’t judge me.

The REAL Batman Vs. Superman

daly vs. conroy

On their Daly Show, Tim Daly (the voice of Superman) and his son Sam take on Kevin Conroy (the voice of Batman).  Mostly they just quote every recent Batman and Superman movie.  But no necks are snapped.  And coming from these guys, it’s all awesome.

An October Trip of Walt Disney World Firsts: Part 8

“First”#16: The Disney Dining Plan

This is one of the most controversial topics amongst Disney World devotees. I not only experienced using the Dining Plan for the first time, but it was as a part of a “free” dining promotion, which some might consider yet another first. Yes, I did put “free” in quotation marks. That’s how any reference to the promotion will appear here. Get used to it.

But this does not mean that you should expect a patently negative assessment of the Disney Dining Plan.

What the Hell Happened to Edward Norton?

edward norton 2013

Edward Norton

Edward Norton has been nominated for three Academy Awards; once for Best Actor and twice for Best Supporting Actor.  He won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in his first movie.  In addition to acting, he has written, directed and produced movies.  He even has a few song-writing credits to his name.  Norton has worked with Miloš Forman, Woody Allen, David Fincher, Ridley Scott and Wes Anderson.  He was even the Incredible Hulk.  But ever since 2008, Norton is rarely seen or heard from and almost never as a leading man.

An October Trip of Walt Disney World Firsts: Part 7

The compartmentalized nature of focusing on all of my “firsts” in my recent trip reports about going to Disney World meant that, while I did go through the trip chronologically, I was able to mention some events in passing and get to the point. So I’m also going to cover a couple of “whole trip” firsts that may be of particular interest to some.
