Movies of 1985 Bracket Game: Back to the Future Vs. Weird Science

Back to the Future Vs Weird Science

With the start of a new year, there’s a whole new slate of movies to look forward to.  Hollywood is hoping 2015 will be a better year at the movies than 2014 was.  But how will the movies of the new year stack up against the movies from 30 years ago?  1985 gave us some classic movies and its share of forgettable ones as well.  In this month’s bracket game we’re going back in time to 1985 to pick our favorites from 30 years ago!

So the final four consists of Back to the Future, Weird Science, Brazil and The Breakfast Club.  The Breakfast Club beat out Witness for the final spot with just over 60% of the vote.  I gotta say, there’s some surprises in there for me.  If you would have told me Weird Science and Brazil would make it to the semi-finals I would not have believed you.

I was pretty sure Weird Science would get knocked out in the first round.  But I was absolutely certain that The Goonies would beat it to face Back to the Future today in the final four.  Now the underdog movie about a couple of nerds who create a beautiful woman on their computer faces its biggest obstacle; the story of a teen who travels back in time in a car to make sure his parents go to the prom.

It’s Back to the Future vs. Weird Science.  Back to the Future was the highest grossing movie of 1985 and remains one of the most beloved movies of the era.  I think most of us would agree it the the favorite it win it all.  Does Weird Science stand a chance?  I say “no” but I have been wrong before.

  1. Yeah, Back to the Future is THE powerhouse of 1985. Let’s celebrate Weird Science making it this far by taking a look at Oingo Boingo’s video for the theme song. Frontman Danny Elfman would go on to write lots of film scores and provide the singing voice for Jack Skellington in Tim Burton’s Nightmare before Christmas.

  3. In Weird Science’s favor: Anthony Michael Hall has a small role in the new film Foxcatcher, which garnered multiple Oscar nominations, ensuring that plenty of people will know what has happened to him for a little while.

  4. Sorry, “Weird Science” (I like “Real Genius” better anyway), you never had a chance. I’ll tell you what, my heart smiles everytime I hear the “Back to the Future” theme, because I know something good is happening
