Disney Songs Poll Results! #1 – “When You Wish Upon a Star”

No ranking of Disney songs that places “When You Wish Upon a Star” in its top spot can be all bad. After all, this is the song that the Disney company has chosen over the years to feature as emblematic of its entire family-centered entertainment empire.

For decades, the tune was front and center as one of the songs played in varying forms at the beginning of its prime time television shows like “Disneyland” and “The Wonderful World of Disney.”

It’s the melody you hear anytime you throw one of your Disney DVDs into the player.

Heck, even Disney’s cruise ships use the first seven notes of “When You Wish Upon a Star” as the sound of their horns. Lebeau and family will be able to confirm that one for us when they return from their first Disney cruise later this month.

I’m not going to spend a lot of time expounding on the virtues of the song, the movie it came from, or any of its backstory. If you want to know a little about the character and recording star who originated “When You Wish upon a Star,” take a look at my article on Jiminy Cricket from earlier this month.

I leave it at saying that you voters did an excellent job here at the top and move on to presenting my own personal top 25 songs from animated Disney films. These are my own favorites, with a little consideration for what is truly significant and iconic thrown in, but you’ll notice some usually highly-rated songs I’ve left out. That’s because I’m not personally a big fan of those songs and this list is peculiar to me. Just because “Let it Go” and “You’ll be in my Heart” won Oscars doesn’t mean I’m in love with them. You won’t see them represented here. Feel free to offer your own list in the comments section, and big thanks to everyone for reading and participating!

1. The Bare Necessities – The Jungle Book

  1. Both lists are great and there is certainly a lot of overlap.. The 2 Jungle Book songs you mentioned are in my top 5 for sure. It does make sense for “When You Wish Upon a Star” to land in the #1 spot, and a couple of commenters here correctly predicted as much yesterday 🙂
“The Workshop Song” I mentioned some time ago is in my personal Top 25, and seems to be largely forgotten today, although it’s a masterpiece of a composition, words and music both.
It was a joy to go back and relive it, after getting involved with the Disney Songs game.. Thanks for the work you put into this and have a wonderful vacation!

      Thanks RB!
I’ve got a couple more articles that will pop up here over the next 2 days and I’m hoping to post one picture a day to help bridge the gap while Lebeau and I are both on vacation.

Babes in Toyland in pretty forgotten in general. Say the name of that song to most Disney fans and they’ll probably think you’re talking about “Whistle While You Work” from Snow White, “The Work Song” from Cinderella, or even “Happy Little Working Song” from Enchanted.

  2. I was right yesterday! 😀

  3. And the winner is–as expected. 🙂 Probably the most iconic single song in the Disney canon, and the most memorable musical moment from one of, if not the, greatest of Disney’s animated features.

    • Pinocchio is my personal favorite Disney film overall. The jaw-dropping quality of the animation, the wonderfully bizarre plot and characters, and the impressive depth of the soundtrack make it an absolute classic. I can watch and appreciate it over and over.
