July 19: Happy Birthday Benedict Cumberbatch and Anthony Edwards

Benedict Cumberbatch

Today, we’re celebrating the births of a future Marvel superhero and a former Top Gun.  Oscar nominee Benedict Cumberbatch turns forty today.  Cumberbatch was nominated for the 2014 film The Imitation Game.  He also plays the titular detective on the British television series, Sherlock; voiced the dragon Smaug in the Hobbit movies; and played a villain who may or may not be Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness.  Later this year, Cumberbatch will play Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme in Doctor Strange.

I’ve never been a big fan of Top Gun, but thirty years ago a lot of people were.  The movie about fighter pilots in training made Tom Cruise a bankable star and probably should have done the same for his costar/rival Val Kilmer.  Anthony Edwards played Cruise’s doomed buddy, Goose.  When movie roles became scarce, Edwards went on to play Dr. Mark Green on the TV show, ER.  Edwards, who also appeared in Revenge of the Nerds and Fast Times at Ridgemont High, turns 54 today.

Queen guitarist Brian May celebrates his 69th birthday.  That calls for a little Bohemian Rhapsody, right?

Also born on this day were Jared Padalecki of the TV show Supernatural and actor Campbell Scott. Padalecki, who had a recurring role on Gilmore Girls, turns 34 today.  And Scott, who is the son of legendary actor George C. Scott and starred opposite Julia Roberts in the drama, Dying Young, turns 55.

If today is your birthday, congratulations on sharing your big day with these notable names.  Birthday wishes to everyone celebrating a big day today.  Come back tomorrow for more celebrity birthdays.

I’m always up for a little Bohemian Rhapsody. Brian May has a very distinctive guitar style that has been often imitated, but never quite duplicated.

Cumberbatch is also someone who has not yet worn out his welcome with me. I’m not saying it can’t ever happen, though. I’m hoping he makes good choices and manages not to become a weird Xerox of himself.

George C Scott’s son is 55 years old? Geez Louise…

  2. I will second Daffy’s hope/wish for Cumberbatch to make good choices in the coming years; I’ve enjoyed a lot of his work, ever since I first saw him in Starter for Ten.

A pair of directors who have done interesting work were also born on July 19. American maverick Abel Ferrara (King of New York, The Funeral, etc.) turns 65 today, while Egptian-Canadian-Armenian director Atom Egoyan (The Sweet Hereafter and many more) turns 56.

  3. Happy Birthday to a great revengeful nerd and a good doctor, Anthony Edwards!
Happy birthday to Brian May too (my favorite Queen song is “Break Free”).
