July 27: Happy Birthday Maya Rudolph and Triple H

Rudolph - Maya and Marty

I looked for a picture of today’s birthday headliners together and came up short.  But I did find a picture of Maya Rudolph from her sketch comedy show Maya and Marty with John Cena playing Hulk Hogan.  It may not have anything to do with Triple H, but it’s within the world of wrestling, so I went with it.

Maya Rudolph was a Not Ready For Prime Time Player on Saturday Night Live from 2000-2007.  She has appeared in movies like Bridesmaids and Grown-Ups, provided the voice of Cass in Disney’s Big Hero 6 and starred on the NBC sitcom Up All Night.  Most recently, Rudolph and fellow SNL alumn Martin Short cohosted the Lorne Michaels-produced sketch show, Maya and Marty.  Rudolph turns 44 today.

I haven’t watched professional wrestling since Andre the Giant’s heyday.  But even I have at least heard of Vince McMahon’s son-in-law, Triple H aka Paul Michael Levesque.  He’s held several championship belts and dabbled in acting (usually playing himself or some variation of his persona).  Triple H is celebrating his 47th birthday today.

Orange is the New Black star, Taylor Schilling, turns 32.  Controversial baseball player Alex “A-Rod” Rodriguez is 41.  Cassandra Clare, author of the bestselling young adult series, The Mortal Instruments, turns 43.  Donnie Yen, star of action movies like Ip Man and Hero, is celebrating his 53rd birthday.  And Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau turns 46.

Julian McMahon, the original big screen Doctor Doom and star of Nip/Tuck, is 48 today.  Blue Collar Comedian, Bill Engvall, celebrates his 59th birtdhay and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, best-known for starring in The Tudors, is 39.

If today is your birthday, congratulations on sharing your big day with these notable names.  Birthday wishes to everyone celebrating a big day today.  Come back tomorrow for more celebrity birthdays.

  1. A big happy birthday to everyone born today. A few other notable July 27 birthdays in the entertainment world:

-Keenan Wynn was a durable character actor who put in over 40 years in film. He was a regular in Disney live-action films, including playing the character of greedy tycoon Alonzo Hawk in The Absent-Minded Professor, Son of Flubber and Herbie Rides Again. He was also one of the gangsters who sings “Brush Up Your Shakespeare” in Kiss Me Kate and Col. Bat Guano in Doctor Strangelove.

-Maury Chaykin was another character actor who showed up in a wide variety of roles on stage and the big and small screens. Every now and then he got a leading role, as when he played detective Nero Wolfe in the A&E series.

-Maureen McGovern was all over radio for a while in the early 1970s, when she sang the theme song “The Morning After” for The Poseidon Adventure, which became a huge hit. She also appeared as the singing nun in Airplane! and had a pretty good stage career in musical theater in the 1980s.

-Guy Carawan was never a mainstream figure, but the folk singer and musicologist had an impact on American culture. In 1960, he introduced the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee to an arrangement he had made of an old spiritual titled “We Shall Overcome,” which, of course, became the anthem of the civil rights movement.

  3. I hadn’t realized today was Nikolaj Coster-Waldau’s birthday, but now it just seems oddly appropriate that I was already planning on starting my Game of Thrones series rewatch on the Kingslayer’s birthday. 🙂
