August 7: Happy Birthday Charlize Theron and David Duchovny

Charlize Theron and David Duchovny

Model-turned actress Charlize Theron won a Best Actress Oscar for getting ugly in the 2003 drama, Monster.  Since then, she has appeared in a number of high-profile movies like Snow White and the Huntsman, Prometheus and Mad Max: Fury Road.  The South African-born actress has never married, but she has adopted two children.  Today, she celebrates her 41st birthday.

Theron’s Fury Road costar, Australian actress and model Megan Gale–their characters had a moving reunion scene in the film–also celebrates her 41st birthday today.

David Duchovny became a star playing FBI agent Fox Mulder on the X-Files in the 90’s.  Prior to that, he played a cross-dressing DEA agent on the TV show, Twin Peaks.  When Duchovny’s movie career stalled, he went back to TV with the Showtime series, Californication.  He was married to actress  Tea Leoni from 1997-2014.  Earlier this year, Duchovny returned to the role that made him famous in an X-Files reunion.  The truth is that the actor turns 56 today.

Michael Shannon was Oscar-nominated for Revolutionary Road and a Golden Globe nominee for 99 Homes; in addition to his extensive indie film work he was General Zod in Man of Steel and also has a significant stage career.  He celebrates his 42nd birthday today.

Stage actress Karen Olivo, who turns 40 today, won a Tony for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for playing Anita in the 2009 revival of West Side Story, then took a Sandra Bullock-style sabbatical from her stage career for a couple of years.  She has recently returned to the stage and also to her film and TV career.  As Anita, she is as good as anyone I’ve ever seen or heard:

Baseball superstar Mike Trout, who some serious observers think is the best player in the game today, turns 25.

Also celebrating birthdays today, Australian actress Abbie Cornish is 34, Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson is 58, Tobin Bell the actor who played Jigsaw in the Saw movies, turns 74, Francesca Eastwood, actress and daughter of Clint Eastwood, turns 23, and Maggie Wheeler best known as Janice on Friends, turns 55.

Still more–soap opera veteran Sydney Penny celebrates her 45th birthday, character actor Wayne Knight (Newman on Seinfeld) turns 61, John Glover (Lionel Luthor in Smallville and Dr. Jason Woodrue in Batman & Robin) turns 72, Jonathan Ke Quan (from Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) celebrates his 45th, and country star and Grammy winner Rodney Crowell celebrates birthday number 66.

Frequent Tyler Perry  collaborator David Mann celebrates his 50th today.  And Chico Benymon from The Haunted Hathaways is 42.  Radio host Garrison Keillor of the long-running variety show ‘A Prairie Home Companion’, turns 74.  Keillor has announced that he will be stepping down as the host of ‘A Prairie Home Companion’ later this year.

Billie Burke, who played Glinda in The Wizard of Oz, was born on August 7, 1884.  Comic and voice actor Stan Freberg was born on this day in 1926.  And director Nicholas Ray, who helmed the landmark teen-oriented film Rebel Without a Cause as well as other memorable movies like Johnny Guitar and In a Lonely Place, was born this day in 1911.

Carl Switzer, the child actor who played Alfalfa in the original Little Rascals shorts, was born on this day in 1927.

If today is your birthday, congratulations on sharing your big day with these notable names.  Birthday wishes to everyone celebrating a big day today.  Come back tomorrow for more celebrity birthdays.

  1. I have a total man crush for David Duchovny (hey, I mentioned “Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead” a week or so ago; he has a small role there). Before “Californication”, there was 1993’s “Kalifornia”, a film that I’m all about. David Duchovny was on a Late Show (don’t remember which one), and I caught a few minutes of it; good stuff.
I think Michael Shannon has had some seriously good moments in film; I liked him in films like “Bug”, “Let’s Go To Prison” (also worth watching for the Technotronic song “Move This”), and “Return”, amongst other projects.
As for Charlize Theron, I think she rarely disappoints.

    • Theron reminds me a little bit of Sandra Bullock–her career has a fair amount of ups and downs from year to year but she is showing a lot of long-term staying power in terms of being a major star.

  2. I do not see it all. Bullock is a box office draw whos trademark genre mostly consists of rom com. While theron mostly plays supporting roles in wide variety of movies. Theron is mostly known for drama that her trademark genre, Both actors are doing good but theron is appearing in hits while bullock is drawing people in. Bullock mostly does light comedy theron tackles heavy drama.

    • jestak2 is comparing their careers, not their roles. I do agree with you in that their filmography is very different from each other, as are the roles for the most part.

    • First, I was trying to compare Bullock and Theron’s career trajectories, not the types of films they do. Second, I don’t agree at all that Bullock’s “trademark genre” is rom-coms. Her big breakthrough role was a high-tension thriller (Speed), and her Best Actress Oscar is for a drama-biopic (The Blind Side). The majority of the films she has made from about 2006 on–such as The Lake House, Infamous, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close and Gravity along with The Blind Side–are pretty clearly at the dramatic end of the scale. Even many of her comedies–think Miss Congeniality or The Heat–are not rom-coms.

  3. I would say bullock has been consistent for most part . theron different story Theron is hit and miss .Her box office is better when she appeares in other people movies. People dubbed propsal and game plan as bullock comeback but she was not appearing in a lot of flops before that film. her films before that lake house crash and premotion where all hits. Her career was still pretty hot before her so called comeback . Theron balance a hit and a flop for a flop with snow white and huntsman she balanced it out with promethues. I always thought nic cage and michael caine had similiar career. They both alternate between oscar winning roles that show off their talent to off random ridiculous that are for money that damaged their carer.Although caine is more respect then cage now like cage caine is still associated with flops. Both actors make a lot of films in 1 cage caine even had a period where he made tons of aciton films tried to have a brief period where they tried becoming action star. I see a lot in common with caine and cage roles

  4. Most people associate bullock with comedies. But i can see what you mean . you can at least see comparison between caine and cage
