Starlog Archives: The Prestige

In between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, director Christopher Nolan made The Prestige.  The Prestige is hard to classify.  It’s not exactly a thriller.  But it’s not a period drama either.  There’s a mystery to unravel, but it’s not a “who dunnit”.  There are elements of science fiction, but it’s not a sci fi movie.  When the movie was released in 2006, no one really knew what to make of it.  Despite a star-studded cast, The Prestige received a relatively modest release.  It’s Nolan’s lowest-grossing movie since Memento.

At the time, stars Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman were already known for their superhero roles.  The Prestige was the unofficial pairing of Batman and Wolverine.  It also reunited Jackman with his Scoop costar, Scarlett Johansson, who would later go on to play Black Widow.  Nolan regular Michael Caine plays another mentor figure and the late, great David Bowie has a cameo as Nikola Tesla.
