The Golden Raspberry Award 2016 Nominees

Golden Raspberry Award

Today is the official kick off of Oscar season.  Which I guess is fine if you’re into prestige dramas and that sort of thing.  But if you’re like me, it’s more fun to see who is going to get skewered by the Golden Raspberry Awards.  We’ll have the Oscar nominations for you as they are announced.  But first, let’s review the movies that were chosen as the worst of 2016.

Lots of DC super heroes this year.  The Razzies piled on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with 8 nominations.  The Ben Stiller comedy Zoolander 2 also landed eight noms.  Four movies racked up five nominations each; Dirty Grandpa, Gods of Egypt, Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party and Independence Day: Resurgence.  Adding to the super hero count, Suicide Squad scored a couple nominations as well.

I’ll save my commentary for the eventual article after the winners are announced.  But feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section.

  2. I don’t think Affleck should have been nominated for BvS. He was one of the very few good things in that awful mess of a movie. And SUICIDE SQUAD should have also been nominated for Worst Picture. Both movies are pretty terrible.

  3. There’s that Hillary’s America deal showing up on the list, as most probably expected.

    • Razzies 2017: 8 Winners That Make No Sense

      http://whatculture.com/film/razzies-2017-8-winners-that-make-no-sense

As is annual tradition, the Golden Raspberry Awards (aka the Razzies) were announced the day before the Oscars, and in some respects will prove to be almost as divisive as the Academy Awards themselves.

If there’s one thing the Razzies always gets wrong, it’s that they pander too much to what’s fashionable to dislike, skewering certain franchises, demographics, actors and directors far more mercilessly than they deserve.

This year wasn’t much different, and while the Oscars is on a clear mission to diversify itself, the Razzies basically feels like the same old one-note joke where mean-spirited people mock a bunch of movies, many of which aren’t even that terrible, but simply disappointing or underwhelming.

As such, these 9 winners don’t make a lick of sense in any logical realm of critical taste, but at least there are some far more sensible nominees in each category that are undeniably worthy of your derision…

      • One note joke, yeah, that about the size of it for me, and probably others feel that way as well. Maybe it’s the fatigue from reading those The Razzies articles on here last year (great work was done on them though), but towards the end it all became too rote and predictable to me.
