September 27: Happy Birthday Lil Wayne and Lola Kirke

Hip hop artist Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr., known by his performing name of Lil Wayne, turns 35 today.  He wrote his first rap song at the age of eight, and began performing and recording when he was 14, as a member of Hot Boys.  His debut solo album, The Block is Hot, came out when he was 17.

Lil Wayne released eleven studio albums between 1999 and 2013, had over thirty singles on which he was lead artist chart on Billboard’s Hot 100, and been a featured artist on another seventy or so charted singles.  His most successful album was the 2008 release Tha Carter III, which became his biggest selling album, won a Grammy for Best Rap Album, and included two singles which won Grammys as well.

In the past years Lil Wayne has had some issues to deal with.  His studio album Tha Carter V, originally planned for a 2014 release, has been repeatedly delayed.  He was diagnosed with epilepsy a few years ago, and recently had to cancel shows after suffering a seizure.

Lola Kirke celebrates her 27th birthday today.  She began acting around the time of her graduation from Bard College in 2012.  She has had supporting roles in major films like Gone Girl and Doug Liman’s upcoming American Made (which stars Tom Cruise and comes out Friday), and starred in indie films like Noah Baumbach’s Mistress America and this year’s Gemini, which received very good reviews after premiering at South by Southwest.  At this point in her career, Kirke is best known for her starring role as oboist Hailey Rutledge on Amazon Studios’ web series Mozart in the Jungle.

Indira Varma, who is 44 today, is known to Game of Thrones fans for playing Ellaria Sand.  She has been working steadily in British television and theater for two decades and has appeared in films like Bride and Prejudice and Exodus: Gods and Kings.  Actor Thomas Mann turns 26 (and of course is not to be confused with the German novelist of the same name).  He starred in the well-received indie film Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, and has had supporting roles in films like Beautiful Creatures and Kong: Skull Island.  Veteran actor and martial artist Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa turns 67.  Known for films like Mortal Kombat and The Phantom, he is currently a regular on The Man in the High CastleCarrie Brownstein, who is 43 today, is known as a member of the indie-punk trio Sleater-Kinney, and as the co-creator of the Emmy-winning sketch comedy series Portlandia.

Don Cornelius (1936-2012) was best known as the creator and longtime host of the syndicated music-dance program Soul Train.  Producer and writer Milton Subotsky (1921-1991) was known for a variety of modestly-budgeted sci-fi and horror films such as Tales From the Crypt and The Land That Time Forgot and for a few Stephen King adaptations such as Maximum Overdrive.

Cosimo de’ Medici (1389-1464) was the founder of the Medici political dynasty who were the dominant force in the Italian city-state of Florence for around 300 years, and also numbered three Popes and two Queens of France among their ranks.  Cosimo was a successful banker, a patron of artists like Donatello, and the founder of the first public library in Florence.  Thomas Nast (1840-1902) was one of the founding fathers of the political/editorial cartoon as a specific form of communication and the most influential such cartoonist of his time, if not in American history.  His cultural impact includes creating the modern visualization of Santa Claus and depicting an elephant as the symbol of the Republican Party.

The headliners on this date last year were Gwyneth Paltrow and Avril Lavigne.

Gwyneth Paltrow is turning 45.  She recently announced that she is taking a break from acting to focus on her lifestyle company, Goop; however, she did make a cameo in Spider-Man: Homecoming and will also return as Pepper Potts in one of the upcoming Avengers films.  Avril Lavigne is 33 today.  She has recently switched record labels and has a new studio album in the works.

German actress Maria Schrader, who turns 52, starred in the miniseries Deutschland 83, which became the first German-language series to air on a US network when it appeared on Sundance.  A second season, titled Deutschland 86, is now reported to be in the works.  Meat Loaf, who is 70, has been touring in support of his Braver Than We Are album during the past year.  Anna Camp, who returns to the role of Aubrey Posen for Pitch Perfect 3, is turning 35.  Like the rest of the cast of Bones, Tamara Taylor, who is 47 and played Camille Saroyan, has come to the end of a durable run on television.  Andy Lau, who is 56, continues to make several films a year and earlier this year was a co-star in The Great Wall.  Stage director Peter Sellars, who turns 60, is directing the world premiere of John Adams’s new opera Girls of the Golden West in San Francisco this November.  Sellars also wrote the libretto for the opera.  Marc Maron, who is 54 today, was one of the stars of the Netflix comedy series GLOW, which was released earlier this year.

If today is your birthday, congratulations on sharing your big day with these notable names.  Birthday wishes to everyone celebrating a big day today.  Come back tomorrow for more celebrity birthdays.
