October 21: Happy Birthday Aaron Tveit and Andrew Scott


Aaron Tveit is celebrating his 34th today.  He was studying musical theater at Ithaca College when he had the opportunity to join the national tour of the musical Rent; he was cast in the small role of Steve while understudying both of the male lead roles, Roger and Mark.  He has gone on to a notable musical theater career, making his Broadway debut as Link Larkin in Hairspray.  He has subsequently appeared on Broadway as Fiyero in Wicked, as Gabe in the original cast of Next to Normal (receiving several acting awards), and as Frank Abagnale in Catch Me if You Can.  He has also done a fair amount of off-Broadway and regional theater work, and starred in a Hollywood Bowl production of Rent as Roger Davies.

Tveit’s first major television role was the recurring character of Trip van der Bilt on Gossip Girl.  He has been a regular on USA Network’s Graceland, and last year on the CBS summer series BrainDead.  He made his feature film debut in 2008 in a small role in Ghost Town, and has had prominent roles in Big Sky and Undrafted.  And he has brought his musical talents to the small and big screen.  He starred as Danny Zuko on Fox’s Grease Live, and played Enjolras in the feature film adaptation of Les Misérables.

Andrew Scott is 41 today.  Like our other headliner, the Irish actor has had a noteworthy career both on stage and screen.  He began his stage career at Dublin’s famed Abbey Theatre, and was nominated for an Irish Times Theatre Award as Edmund Tyrone in a production of Long Day’s Journey Into Night.  He has won two Olivier Awards for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre, and made his Broadway debut in 2006 in David Hare’s The Vertical Hour.  Earlier this year, he starred in the title role of a West End revival of Hamlet.

Scott made his screen debut in a 1996 Irish feature titled Korea.  He had a bit part in Saving Private Ryan, won an Irish Film and Television Academy award for 2003’s Dead Bodies, and a British Independent Film Award for Pride in 2014.  In the past year, he has been in films like Swallows and Amazons and This Beautiful Fantastic, but his most famous film role, has likely been as Max “C” Denbigh in Spectre.  On television, he played Col. William Smith on HBO’s John Adams and Paul McCartney on Lennon Naked.  He won a BAFTA Television Award for season 2 of Sherlock as the season’s main villain.

Matt Dallas, who starred as the title character of ABC Family’s KyleXY, is 35 today.  Michael McMillian, who is 39, is best known for his recurring role on Crazy Ex-GirlfriendLatanya Richardson is 68 today; the wife of Samuel L. Jackson, she was a Tony nominee for starring in a 2013 revival of A Raisin in the Sun.

Spanish director Julio Medem, a nine-time Goya Award nominee in writing and directing categories, is turning 59 today.  He is known for films such as Lovers of the Arctic Circle, Sex and Lucia, and Room in Rome.

Irish musician Derek Bell (1935-2002) was one of the finest harpists of his time.  He was best known as a longtime member of the traditional Irish group The Chieftains.

Alfred Nobel (1833-1896) was a Swedish chemist, engineer and businessman.  During his lifetime he held over 350 patents, most notably that for dynamite, which he invented.  He left most of his wealth in a trust which became the endowment for the Nobel Prizes.  Martin Gardner (1914-2010) was one of the leading popular science writers of his time.  He was best know for the Mathematical Recreations columns which he contributed to Scientific American for 25 years, many of which were collected in a series of books.

Last year on October 21, Carrie Fisher and Dizzy Gillespie were headliners.

Carrie Fisher, as most readers know, passed away last December after going into cardiac arrest on a flight from London to Los Angeles.  She had completed two films prior to her death which have yet to be released, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Wonderwell.

Elvin Bishop, who turns 75, released the album Elvin Bishop’s Big Fun Trio earlier this year.  Glen Powell, who is 29, played astronaut John Glenn in Hidden Figures and was featured in this year’s Sand CastleSasha Roiz, who celebrates his 44th, has finished the final season of Grimm and now appears on CBS’s Salvation.  Spanish actress Blanca Suarez is one of the stars of Netflix’s Spanish-language series Cable Girls, which begins its second season in December.  Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman, who remains a regular on Lifetime’s UnREAL, turns 33 today.  Ken Watanabe, who is 58 today, was the voice of Drift in Transformers: The Last KnightEverett McGill, who celebrates his 72nd, came out of retirement to appear in the Twin Peaks revival earlier this year as Big Ed Hurley.
