0104OrmondSaura

English actress Julia Ormond celebrates her 53rd birthday today.  She acted in school stage productions and made her screen debut in 1989 in a central role on the British miniseries Traffik (the basis for Steven Soderbergh’s Oscar-winning feature Traffic).  She made her feature film debut in 1993 in Peter Greenaway’s The Baby of Mâcon, but it was a year later when she began to be well-known for playing Susannah Fincannon-Ludlow in Legends of the Fall.  For the next few years she was flirting with major leading lady status, playing Guinevere in First Knight and the title character in the remake of Sabrina.  She then starred in Bille August’s adaptation of Peter Høeg’s novel Smilla’s Sense of Snow.

After the late 1990s, Ormond, while not a major star, has been involved in a variety of projects.  She was an Olivier Award nominee for starring in the original West End production of David Hare’s My Zinc Bed.  Her feature film appearances have included David Lynch’s Inland Empire, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and playing Vivien Leigh in My Week With Marilyn.  And she has carved out a nice television career in both Britain and the US.  Highlights have included an Emmy-winning performance in the HBO movie Temple Grandin, and an Emmy-nominated guest appearance on Mad Men.  Most recently she appeared on the BBC/Starz miniseries Howard’s End.

Director Carlos Saura, who is 86 today, is often mentioned in the same breath as Luis Buñuel and Pedro Almodóvar as one of Spain’s three greatest filmmakers.  He began directing in the 1950s; his second feature, Los golfos, was nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes.  He became very well known for his films made in the late years of Francisco Franco’s rule, often subtly critical of the dictator; several of these, such as Peppermint Frappé and Ana and the Wolves, starred Geraldine Chaplin.

In the post-Franco years, many of Saura’s films have celebrated a variety of traditional Spanish art forms, particularly dance.  These include two of Saura’s three films to have been nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, Carmen (the middle film of his “Flamenco” trilogy, an adaptation of the novel by Prosper Mérimée), and Tango.

Michelle Mylett, who is a regular on the Canadian sitcom Letterkenny and stars in the upcoming feature Goliath, turns 28 today.  June Diane Raphael, who is 38, is a regular on Netflix’s Grace and Frankie, and co-wrote and starred in Ass Backwards with Casey Wilson.  Also celebrating her 38th is D’Arcy Carden, who is a regular on NBC’s The Good PlaceGraham McTavish is turning 57.  He played Dwalin in The Hobbit trilogy and is a regular on AMC’s PreacherJulian Sands, who turns 60, starred in the title role of Dario Argento’s The Phantom of the Opera, and appeared twice on Smallville as Jor-El.

The headliners for this date last year were Dyan Cannon and Patty Loveless.

Dyan Cannon, who turns 81, has been retired for nearly a decade.  Country singer Patty Loveless, who is 61 today, is also semi-retired, although she still makes occasional appearances at the Grand Ole Opry.

Matt Frewer turns 60; he appeared in the horror film Residue and is a voice actor on the animated web series Castlevania.  French actor Yvan Attal, who is 53, appeared in two features last year, Raid dingue and Guillaume Canet’s Rock’n RollAugust Diehl, who starred in Terrence Malick’s Radegund, is turning 42.  Also 42 is Seth Grahame-Smith, who wrote the screen play for The Lego Batman MovieHarmony Korine, who turns 45, is working on his first feature since Spring Breakers, The Beach BumKerry Condon celebrates her 35th birthday; she returned as the voice of Tony Stark’s AI, Friday, in Spider-Man: Homecoming and had a supporting part in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and will appear in the upcoming Bad SamaritanLenora Crichlow, who will be a regular on ABC’s upcoming series Deception, turns 33 today.
