March 2 & 3: Happy Birthday Bryce Dallas Howard and Jessica Biel
Bryce Dallas Howard celebrates her 37th today. The daughter of director Ron Howard, she made appearances as a child in his films Parenthood and Apollo 13. While attending NYU, she did some Off-Broadway theater work, including starring as Rosalind in a Public Theater production of As You Like It; she later reprised the role in Kenneth Branagh’s film adaptation of the Shakespeare play, and received a Golden Globe nomination. Her first prominent feature film role was in M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village; she worked with Shyamalan again on Lady in the Water and starred in Lars von Trier’s Manderlay.
In the late 2000s Howard appeared in some high-profile franchise installments—as Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man 3, Kate Connor in Terminator Salvation, and the evil vampire Victoria in the third Twilight film. She also appeared in the ensemble cast of the critically acclaimed period drama The Help in 2011, after which she took a few years off from feature film work. She returned to the big screen to star in the enormously successful Jurassic World in 2015, and will reprise her role of Claire Dearing in the sequel later this year.
Jessica Biel is turning 36 today. She first became known as a teenager, for her regular role as Mary Camden on 7th Heaven, the most widely-watched series in the history of the WB network. The show gave her a high profile, although not always completely positive (Google her name and “Gear magazine” for one an example of the downside). During the show’s early years she also made her feature film debut in Ulee’s Gold.
During the 2000s, Biel appeared in a number of major films—as the Final Girl, Erin, in the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, as Abby Whistler in Blade: Trinity, in the period drama The Illusionist, in the film adaptation of The A-Team, and in the remake of Total Recall—without really becoming a major star. More recently she has appeared in a number of indie features. Last year she returned to television as the star and a producer of the USA Network miniseries The Sinner—she received a pair of Golden Globe nominations, one as a producer, the other for Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie.
Additional birthdays from yesterday include comedian/actress Laraine Newman, who turned 66. She was an original cast member of Saturday Night Live and a founding member of The Groundlings. Maisie Richardson-Sellers, who plays Amaya Jiwe/Vixen on Legends of Tomorrow, turned 26. Bulgarian actress Anjela Nedyalkova, who turned 27 yesterday, starred in the Dutch film The Paradise Suite and had a prominent role in T2 Trainspotting.
English actor Jon Finch (1942-2012) was well known in the 1970s for starring in films like Roman Polanski’s adaptation of Macbeth, in the title role, and Alfred Hitchcock’s Frenzy.
Today’s birthdays include Laura Harring, who starred in a dual role in David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive; she turns 54. Sean Bridgers, who is 50, is a regular on Epix’s Get Shorty and played Old Nick in Room. Charlie Brooker, the creator of the British sci-fi anthology series Black Mirror, and a two-time Emmy winner for the same, is 47 today.
Ron Chernow, who is 69 today, is the author of a number of award-winning biographies, including Washington: A Life, which won the Pulitzer Prize, and Alexander Hamilton, which was the source for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical Hamilton. Ira Glass, who is turning 59, is the host of the long-running public radio program This America Life, a winner of long list of radio awards including Peabody and Polk Awards.
Daniel Craig and Jon Bon Jovi were the March 2 headliners a year ago.
Daniel Craig celebrated his 50th. Last summer Craig confirmed that he has not yet sipped his last martini (shaken, not stirred), and will return as James Bond for one more film. He appeared as wacky safecracker Joe Bang in Steven Soderbergh’s Logan Lucky, and received a number of award nominations, including for a Drama Desk Award, for starring as Iago in a New York Theatre Workshop production of Othello. Jon Bon Jovi turned 56; he and the band that takes its name from him will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this year.
Nathalie Emmanuel, who is 29, continues to appear as Missandei on Game of Thrones and returned to the role of Ramsey in The Fate of the Furious. Rebel Wilson, who returned to the role of Patricia Hobart, aka “Fat Amy,” for Pitch Perfect 3, turned 38. Pilou Asbæk, who celebrated his 36th, had prominent roles in Ghost in the Shell and Woodshock, and also continues on Game of Thrones as Euron Greyjoy. Broadway great John Cullum is still working at 88; he appeared as a replacement in the cast of the musical Waitress and on several episodes of Madam Secretary as a senator. Chris Martin and Coldplay released the EP Kaleidoscope last summer; Martin is 41. Becky G, who turned 21, starred as the Yellow Ranger, Trini, in Power Rangers, and toured as the opening act for Fifth Harmony.
Our headliners last year on this date were George Miller and Katherine Waterston.
George Miller is 73 today. He is at work on a fifth Mad Max film, with a working title of Mad Max: The Wasteland; however, little is known about the project at this date. Katherine Waterston, who will return to the role of Porpentina Goldstein in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, is 38. She starred in last year’s Alien: Covenant and had smaller roles in Logan Lucky and The Current Wars.
Miranda Richardson, who turns 60, costarred as Clementine Churchill in the British drama Churchill (with Brian Cox in the title role), and had a sizable role in Stronger. Earlier this year she starred in the British drama series Girlfriends. Julie Bowen, who is 48, will be costarring opposite Melissa McCarthy in the upcoming Life of the Party. Mercedes Mason, who turns 35, has apparently made her final appearance on Fear the Walking Dead. Country singer and songwriter Jennifer Warnes, who celebrates her 71st, will be releasing her first studio album in nearly two decades this spring; the first single from the album just came out.
