March 10: Happy Birthday Jon Hamm and Olivia Wilde

Jon Hamm is celebrating his 47th today.  He grew up in the St. Louis area and attended John Burroughs School, where his prom date was actress Sarah Clarke.  After he graduated from the University of Missouri, he taught drama at John Burroughs for a few years; one of his students was Ellie Kemper.  In the mid-1990s, he moved to Los Angeles, where he became the first-ever aspiring actor to wait tables while trying to establish himself.

His major part came when he was cast in the role of Burt Ridley on seasons 2 and 3 of Providence in 2000-01.  He worked regularly in television for the next several years, and also made appearances in features like Kissing Jessica Stein and We Were Soldiers.  Then he got his big break in 2007, when he was cast in the lead role of Don Draper on AMC’s Mad Men.  The role brought him eight consecutive nominations for the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama—he won for the show’s final season—as well as a pair of Golden Globes.

During his time on Mad Men, Hamm also received a couple of Emmy nominations for guest appearances on 30 Rock.  In the past few years, he has had major film roles, such as Tim Jones in Keeping Up with the Joneses and the banker-turned-heist artist Buddy in Baby Driver.  He stars in Brad Anderson’s Beirut, which recently screened at Sundance, has been nominated for another Emmy for a recurring role on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (which stars his former student Ellie Kemper), and will be a regular on the upcoming Amazon miniseries Good Omens.

Olivia Wilde (given name Olivia Cockburn—admit it, you’d go with a screen name if that was your last name) is turning 34.  She is from a well-known family in the journalism world, who also have some film connections.  The film The Peacemaker was based on an article by her parents, Andrew and Leslie Cockburn, while her grandfather Claud Cockburn wrote the novel Beat the Devil, adapted into a film by John Huston.

Wilde’s screen debut was as a regular on the short-lived Fox series Skin in 2003; she then appeared as Alex Kelly on season 2 of The O.C.  She also began getting good film roles in the mid 2000s, in films like Bickford Schmeckler’s Cool Ideas and Turistas, before being added to the cast of House for season 4 in the role of Remy “Thirteen” Hadley.  She remained with the show through season 7 and also returned for the series finale.

Wilde has mostly focused on feature films since House.  She has had a few roles in big-budget productions, notably Tron: Legacy and Cowboys & Aliens, but most of her activity has been in the indie film area.  Two highlights have been her starring roles in Drinking Buddies and Meadowland, both of which she also co-produced and both of which have received very favorable reviews.

Grace Victoria Cox, who turns 23 today, will star as Veronica Sawyer on the upcoming Paramount Network series Heathers (based on the cult classic film).  Danny Pudi, who is 39, is best known for his regular role on Community as Abed Nadir.  Ser’Darius Blain, who celebrates his 31st, played Anthony “Fridge” Johnson in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and will be a regular on the upcoming CW reboot of Charmed.

Clare Booth Luce (1903-1987) was one of the most prominent women in American public life in the mid-20th century.  She was known as the wife of magazine publisher Henry Luce (Time, Life, etc.), but also notable in her own right for writing the play The Women, for her two terms in Congress, and for being the first American woman appointed to a major ambassadorship (to Italy in the 1950s).

Last year on this date, Sharon Stone and Carrie Underwood were our headliners.

Sharon Stone, today’s WTHH birthday, is turning 60.  She starred in last year’s Running Wild and All I Wish, and also co-produced the latter, and had a supporting role in The Disaster Artist.  She was also the star of the HBO miniseries Mosaic, which in addition to its television release was also released in mobile app form as an interactive movie.  Country-pop star Carrie Underwood celebrates her 35th.  She had a relatively quiet 2017; she is reportedly working on a sixth studio album, and released a concert video from her 2016 Storyteller Tour in digital form last fall.

Rafe Spall, who is also 35 today, starred in the British horror film The Ritual, and will have a supporting role in the upcoming Jurassic World: Fallen KingdomEmily Osment, who is 26, continues to star on Freeform’s Young & Hungry; the final ten episodes from season of which will air later this year.  Edi Gathegi, who turns 39, is a regular on Sony Crackle’s StartUpThomas Middleditch, who continues to star on HBO’s Silicon Valley and will appear in the upcoming thriller Replicas, is 36.  Scott Frank, who is turning 58, received an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for Logan, and also created, directed and wrote the Netflix miniseries GodlessPaget Brewster, who is 49, is in her second stint as Emily Prentiss on Criminal Minds, and is also a regular on Comedy Central’s Another Period.
