For many years there was a definitive line between the performers who appeared on the big screen and those who showed up weekly in our living rooms. Crossover certainly happened at times. Jack Klugman is best known for the years he spent as Oscar Madison on “The Odd Couple” television show and as the titular character on “Quincy,” despite appearing in well-respected films like Days of Wine and Roses, and 12 Angry Men. The king of Television sitcoms, Dick Van Dyke, crossed over memorably into silver screen musicals like Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and Bye Bye Birdie. There are many other examples, but there was a time when there was a stigma attached to working in television.
TV was considered work that you did when you were climbing up to stardom…and when you were climbing back down.
Vestiges of this attitude still remain, but with the advent of premium television series which can address topics previously reserved to R-rated films, the cross-pollination of talent has increased. As content restrictions also loosened on the major networks, well-known actors began to find more attractive opportunities. Established film actors like Keifer Sutherland, Dustin Hoffman, Tim Roth, Steve Buscemi, and Kevin Spacey have taken on starring roles in these shows. The bleed through is going both ways, though, and while catching up on this year’s Oscar nominated films, I happily noted several actors in small roles who I know from such shows.
Let’s take a look at a few!

The Fall TV season is in full swing and frankly, I’m not watching much of it. But there are a handful of shows I am keeping up with. Ideally, I would love to write weekly recaps for all the shows I watch. But unfortunately, that’s just not an option. I still intend to do weekly write-ups for The Walking Dead when it starts this Sunday. Everything else will get lumped together in a weekly post I’m calling TV Talk. This week, I’m looking at Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, Survivor and American Horror Story: Coven. Since I’m not watching much else, I’ll probably be looking at those shows again next week too. 😉
Later tonight, I’ll watch AMC’s The Walking Dead. Typically I watch the show when it airs and then I rewatch it while cranking out my write-up. I can usually finish it within the hour between the first airing and Talking Dead. That’s because The Walking Dead is a pretty simple show that doesn’t require much from me as a viewer.
Well THAT was messed up. I mean seriously messed up.
Only three episodes into the new season of American Horror Story on FX and things are already spinning out of control. Or maybe “coming apart at the seams?”
**Warning! Spoilers for “Nor’easter” and other horror films**
The pilot for the season included serial killers, aliens and Jessica Lange as a nun who wears red lingerie. The only things missing were an exorcism and Zachary Qunito. So it’s probably not all that surprising that the second episode included Quinto performing an exorcism. Although Lange killing a child was still pretty shocking. It’s another jam=packed episode of American Horror Story. So let’s dive right in. Read the rest of this entry
Better late than never, here is my long-promised write-up of the season premiere of the second season of American Horror Story subtitled Asylum. As a programming note, I am going to try to keep up with this season as best I can. But sadly, when a show airs after my bed time in the middle of the work week, delays are likely.
FX has been letting out a stream of creepy images and trailers to get you excited for the new season, this one set in an asylum in Boston.
I approached this series with some reluctance. Sure, the commercials were weird and inventive. But I had no idea what to expect. With my TV dance card full, I let episodes build up on my DVR while I waited to hear some feedback on the show. Well, a few commenters in the Walking Dead reviews urged me to start watching. So I did. And I have to admit that American Horror Story is a better show than Walking Dead on just about every non-zombie-related level I can think of. Thanks to all those who recommended it to me.
