November 24: Happy Birthday Conleth Hill and Stephen Merchant

In the past two decades, Conleth Hill, who turns 53 today, has had an extremely successful stage career.  After graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, in London, Hill worked regularly at the Lyric Theatre of Belfast, Northern Ireland’s main full-time drama venue.  He made his West End and Broadway debuts in Marie Jones’s two-hander, Stones in His Pocket, in 2000 and 2001, respectively; he received an Olivier Award and was a Tony nominee.  He has won a second Olivier Award for the original London production of the musical The Producers, and was a Tony nominee for the original Broadway production of Conor McPherson’s The Seafarer.

Hill began making regular guest appearances on British television in the late 1980s, and more recently he has appeared in films such as Perrier’s Bounty.  His most significant screen role has undoubtedly been as Varys, the Spider, on Game of Thrones.  He is one of two members of his family involved with the series; his younger brother, Ronan, has won three Emmys for sound mixing for his work on the show.

November 24: Happy Birthday Katherine Heigl and Billy Connolly

Katherine Heigl is celebrating her 38th today.  Her first major role was in the American remake of My Father the Hero, as Gerard Depardieu’s daughter, following which she played Steven Seagal’s daughter in Under Siege 2.  In 1999 she began appearing on The WB’s Roswell as the alien-human hybrid Isabel Evans.  A few years after Roswell’s run ended, she was cast as Isobel “Izzie” Stevens on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, one of the top hits on television in the mid-2000s (warning, the following video may be slightly NSFW).

Happy 37th Birthday Katherine Heigl

Knocked Up movie image Seth Rogen Katherine Heigl

It’s Katherine Heigl’s 37th birthday today!  Since the Knocked Up star already has her own gallery, we’re going to celebrate with an embarrassing commercial from her past (like we do).  I only have one this time, but it’s a doozy.  Here is Katherine Heigl, future star of Grey’s Anatomy, in a 1996 commercial for an HIV detection kit.

Happy birthday, Katherine Heigl!

The A-List: Don’t Call It a Comeback

Dumb and Dumber To

This past weekend, Dumb and Dumber To exceeded even the most optimistic box office projections.  Critics were unkind to the sequel, but audiences who have been waiting twenty years for more Dumb and Dumber didn’t care.  Now there’s talk of a Dumb and Dumber trilogy!

The box office success of Dumb and Dumber To has some people talking about a comeback for Jim Carrey.  Carrey’s movie career has cooled over the last decade or so.  His last unqualified box office hit was arguably Bruce Almighty in 2003.  When a Dumb and Dumber sequel was announced, it seemed to some (myself included) like a desperation move.  But now, it seems like a “hail mary pass” that connected.

What the Hell Happened to Katherine Heigl?

unite4:good And Variety's unite4:humanity

Katherine Heigl first came onto the scene with the cult TV series Roswell. She would go on to greater TV success with Grey’s Anatomy, which would win her an Emmy Award. From there, Heigl capitalized on that success with success in a trilogy of romantic comedies. In recent years, though, she became known as a cautionary tale about the dangers of biting the hand that feeds you. As a result, her most recent appearance was a commercial for NyQuil.

What the hell happened?
