Best Actress Bracket Game: Halle Berry Vs. Hilary Swank

swank-vs-berry

We’re wrapping up round one of the Best Actress bracket game with our two most recent winners.  Since I was looking to feature multiple recipients, Hillary Swank was a no-brainer for inclusion in the game.  But there was some question over which actresses to include from the 21st century.  There have been some deserving winners in memorable roles.  One could argue that recent winners like Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore or Brie Larson might resonate more with readers.  Believe me, that conversation took place.  But ultimately, the last spot went to Halle Berry due to the historic nature of her win.

Rank the Oscar Winning Movies: the 2000s

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 7.01.47 PM

We are entering the home stretch now and a period in which I started not just making sure to see each of the nominated films, but also trying to see all of the movies with awards buzz that I could prior to the nominations ever being announced. As difficult as it is to see all of the nominees before the awards ceremony airs, imagine how maddening it would be to try and guess which movies might be nominated and see all of those. I not only ran from movie house to movie house in all day feasts of cinema on the big screen (as readers at LeBlog saw me do back in August), but also desperately rented every moderately praised movie at the local video store. This led to screenings of horrendous crap like Kurt Russell in Dark Blue and jaw-dropping curiosities like The Saddest Music in the World. I also wound up seeing obvious Oscar bait that managed to just miss the mark like Kevin Costner’s Open Range.

I did all of this because, in the days before blogging was a well-known thing, I had started sending out my own choices for the top Oscar category nominations in a mass email to all of my friends. I emphasized to everyone who ended up getting the thing that these were merely my own choices for the best movies and performances of the year organized in a way that was very much like the nominations of the Academy Awards and sent out the night before those nominations were to be announced. These were not to be misunderstood as a prediction of who actually would be nominated and I implored my friends not to place any bets based on my list, as they would surely lose their shirts. I did this for about five years and the list of friends who received the list grew exponentially over those years. I discontinued the practice when I got married and enrolled in graduate school and heard a little bit of whining from a couple of friends on the subject for a couple of years. I guess I had built an audience.

To this day there are movies I know I’ve seen but can’t remember much about because of how I crammed them in together. Let’s find out how you feel about last decade’s Oscar winners!

What the Hell Happened to Hilary Swank?

Hilary Swank

Hilary Swank

Hilary Swank came from humble beginnings.  As a teenager, she and her single mother were homeless.  By the age of 30, she had won two Academy Awards for Best Actress.  But after winning her second Oscar, Swank’s career stalled out.  Today, the two-time Oscar-winner is stuck in direct-to-video horror movies and ensemble romantic comedies named after minor holidays.

What the hell happened?
