February 16 & 17: Happy Birthday Rene Russo and Michael Bay


Rene Russo is celebrating her 64th birthday today; she is today’s WTHH birthday.  She was signed to a contract by the Ford Modeling Agency in her late teens—the story is she was spotted by an agent at a Rolling Stones concert—and spent over a decade as a top model with a number of magazine covers to her credit.  In the mid-1980s she moved into acting.  After a screen debut in the short-lived ABC series Sable in 1987, she moved into feature film work 1989’s Major League.  Her breakout role was as Internal Affairs investigator Lorna Cole in Lethal Weapon 3, following which she costarred with Clint Eastwood in In the Line of Fire, and played Z-list actress Karen Flores in Get Shorty.

February 17: Happy Birthday Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Jim Brown


Joseph Gordon-Levitt turns 36 today.  He began acting as a child and started to become well known for a pair of roles he played as a teenager, Tommy Solomon in 3rd Rock from the Sun and Cameron James in 10 Things I Hate About You.  He scaled back his acting career for a few years while studying at Columbia University, but eventually dropped out and returned to film and television.  One of his first films after doing so was a film noir pastiche set in a high school:

Dumb and Dumber To

This past weekend, Dumb and Dumber To exceeded even the most optimistic box office projections.  Critics were unkind to the sequel, but audiences who have been waiting twenty years for more Dumb and Dumber didn’t care.  Now there’s talk of a Dumb and Dumber trilogy!

The box office success of Dumb and Dumber To has some people talking about a comeback for Jim Carrey.  Carrey’s movie career has cooled over the last decade or so.  His last unqualified box office hit was arguably Bruce Almighty in 2003.  When a Dumb and Dumber sequel was announced, it seemed to some (myself included) like a desperation move.  But now, it seems like a “hail mary pass” that connected.

Rene Russo came seemingly out of nowhere and became one of the top actresses of the 90’s.  She start in a string of hits for most of the decade.  She has worked with directors like Richard Donner, Wolfgang Petersen, Barry Sonnenfeld, and Ron Howard.  And then, as suddenly as she appeared, she left Hollywood for a six year hiatus.  These days, she plays the mother of the god of thunder in the Thor movies.
